CAREER EXPLORATION

12.11.2024

Careers and the challenges that surround them, a minefield unless you know deep inside what you want to do by age 11, and this is in fact unusual. The influences are many and the impact varies depending on social and cultural factors, along with the emotional intelligence of the career explorer. Some of the influences come from parents, siblings, extended family, peer group, schoolteachers and the community. For example, since the UAE space program launch and Fighter pilot Astronaut Major Hazzaa Al Mansoori was the first to train and visit space. Nora Al Matrooshi became the first Emirati and Arab woman astronaut, selected in the second batch of the UAE Astronaut Programme. Demonstrating that gender is not an issue to pursue your passions. Many children in UAE now have this career in mind and it is their ambition, in stark contrast to the way things were back in 1995, when the options were much less exciting and open to women.

CHANGE IS CONSTANT

Women were graduating as engineers, IT, marketing and media but culturally were not able to work in these roles. Since then, UAE has championed women and their careers as well as ensuring opportunities are protected within the Labour Law which int turn reflects the commitment of the UAE Government.

CAREER THEORY

Here we can think about John Hollands career theory and that of vocational choice where he emphasizes the need to align yourself and your personality with that of your career journey. Nowadays we think more about core traits, aptitude’s and behaviours, plus contributing to the UAE. When people are enjoying a role that aligns with writing your own career narrative leading to job satisfaction, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and overall physical and mental health.

TVET

How ever being that we are well into the 4th Industrial Revolution and TVET [Technical Vocational Educational Training] the UAE has identified a need to produce 10 Emiratis with vocational skills for every university graduate produced to achieve a sustainable and diversified knowledge-based economy.

TOOLS

One of the tools we use at INNOTIVES is career explorer with PRISM, this can be managed entirely by the explorer once they are signed up, they will receive a username and password and then they can explore as much as they wish. Alternatively, they can work with a certified practitioner from within INNOTIVES which can be a more beneficial experience, but the options are there.

PRISM CAREER EXPLORER is a stand-alone inventory that enables the career explorers to identify a career that is consistent with their skills, work aptitudes and behavioural strengths. The power is in its ability to match the explorers to benchmarks to a database O’NET of more than 1000 roles. Making it simple and straightforward for the explorer to sue and then identify careers that best match their expectations and to convince their parents or guardians and others in their circles of influence that this is the right choice.

PRISM CAREER EXPLORER generates a comprehensive personal profile of strengths, potential areas for further development which can be deployed when writing or presenting the explorer to potential interviewers or decision makers. The resource utilized is expanded on in the next paragraph.

What is the O*Net database?

The O*NET program is the United States’ primary source of occupational information. Central to the project is the O*NET database, containing information on hundreds of standardized and occupation-specific descriptors. The database is continually updated by surveying a broad range of workers from each occupation. Explore the database to provide you with the most-up-to-date occupational information. Even if you are not based in USA, the information is mostly transferable to occupations throughout the world. The database is there as a guide to possible occupations, allowing for further research on the occupation and the qualifications needed to pursue them.

CAREER EXPLORATION is vital to ensure that future job seekers are versatile, motivated and engaged with opportunities to grow where they are or to be identified as talent for alternative careers as well as leadership.

CIRCLES OF INFLUENCE

And that brings us back to where we started with Hazaa Al Mansoori and Nora al Matrooshi.
